Today we talk to Adrian Idiazabal, whose journey has taken him from law, finance and consulting to URW, where he now heads up development and construction in Spain.

"I studied law at university. I even took the bar exam. But, very early on, I realised it wasn't for me. Next, I worked in investment banking in London, but finance alone wasn’t my passion. I needed a job that offered diversity, problem-solving and the chance to make an impact in a sector I cared about."

After an MBA, and while working as a consultant, Adrian was called by a head-hunter about a position at URW. "I was honest with the recruiter: I told him I liked real estate but had no direct experience. To my surprise, this wasn't a problem. URW was looking for candidates who could bring a fresh perspective." In 2018, Adrian joined URW as Senior Operating Manager in Spain, overseeing six assets. "It was a steep learning curve," he admits. "Managing teams, working on operational efficiencies and contributing to asset performance – it was a rewarding challenge that pushed me to my limits."

Finding the perfect pace and challenge

From managing operations, Adrian soon expanded his scope. "I moved to Group Asset Management and Development in Paris, helping set up growth strategies for our assets in Southern Europe. The role exposed me to urban planning, development negotiations and strategic investments – building my understanding of the full lifecycle of major real estate assets."

Adrian's curiosity and open-minded approach supported successive moves. "I spent nearly two years in France working on high-profile development projects," he says. "Being flexible and eager to learn really opened doors to new opportunities within the Group." In late 2023, Adrian returned to Spain, where he now works as Director of Development and Construction Management. "My focus is on value creation – driving strategic investments, managing relationships with various stakeholders and implementing sustainability initiatives," he explains. "This role combines financial acumen, operational management and creative problem-solving – it's perfect for what drives me."

A culture that recognises and rewards potential

The way URW supports career growth and mobility has kept Adrian engaged. "URW fosters internal mobility. When I wanted to explore development and management, the company encouraged me to take on new roles. It's a culture that promotes growth and recognises potential."

He also credits the company's emphasis on continuous learning. "URW plunges you straight into the action but, with so many experts willing to collaborate, you learn quickly. From seeing an asset develop from concept to delivery, to managing complex negotiations, every challenge has contributed to my growth." Adrian finds satisfaction in the impact of his work, too. "We work with local authorities and residents to ensure our assets add value to the communities, create employment and support sustainable development. We have ambitious environmental targets to reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions and operate more responsibly, and I see tangible progress every day."

Ultimately, it's URW's culture that keeps him engaged. "The company encourages innovation, supports risk-taking and values creative thinking," he explains. "The energy, the drive for excellence and the willingness to challenge conventional approaches – that's what makes the environment stimulating." *
